Central Library
Library
is one of university’s supporting institutionsthat can be used for the
improvement of the graduates’ quality. Since 2009, the Central Library of
Universitas Negeri Malang has provided digital library services or e-library in
the form of online journals. Pro-Quest Ebsco and Gale Engage international
online journals are subscribed to through the account of the Ministry of Higher
Education. The e-journals can beaccessed through computers in the Magazine Room
and via internet using the library’s hotspot. Addresses of online journal sites
can be viewed through the library website at http://library.um.ac.id.
Another
e-library service is OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) which contains a
collection of local contents (Mulok) at Universitas Negeri Malang and books.
The collection of books and Mulok are in the form of scientific papers, final projects,
undergraduate thesis, thesis, dissertation, and professors’ promotion speeches.
The database can be accessed via the internet at http://mulok.library.um.ac.id.
Development
of library collections (Indonesian / English texts) is conducted through
procurement funds from government (PNBP and BOPTN). In 2013 the total
collection was 44,175 titles or 104,822 copies. The selection of book
collections involved academic staff members and students. Proposals for the
procurement of new books by students can be done by filling in the electronic
forms in the OPAC Menu. It is expected that this strategy enable to optimize
the utilization of the available informational sources. In addition to printed collections,
in 2013 the university’s central library added 173 e-book collections through
procurement funds from BOPTN (Oxford Scholarship and Willey) which can be
accessed via LAN or wifi in the campusat http://library.um.ac.id/index.php/E-Book-Online/e-book-online.html.
The
easiness of providing services to the academic community becomes the
institution’s priority. The central library information software systems is continuously
developed to provide convenience in service delivery. Currently the circulation
service uses aself-service system. Students can directly borrow books or
reserve collection and extend their books’ return date by themselves through
computers at the service section without the help of library staffs. A certain
administration window is provided for tracking service.
In
order to disseminate the academics’ scientific papers through the internet, all
students are required to upload the abstracts of their works to the university’s
website. Students of undergraduate and associate degree can upload their works through
the computer terminals in the library. This has contributed to the university’s
web ranking by Webometric since, in January 2013, the university’s website
ranks 12th among all universities in Indonesia and ranks first in the category
of former IKIP universities.
In
2009, Universitas NegeriMalang held a memorandum of cooperation with the Saudi
Arabian Embassy in Jakarta to provide Arabiclanguage collections. The
initiative, called the Arab Saudi Corner, provides various materials about
Islamic studies in the form of e-books and printed articles placed in the
Reserve Room at the third floor of the central library. In 2012 the library collaborated
with the US Consulate General in Surabaya to build a US Reference Center
service. The collection from the Saudi Arabian embassy and the US Consulate
General can be borrowed or downloaded by the students using the available
computers. In 2012 the institution launched a free internet service for
students without laptops. For this service, 10 (ten) PCs and 3Mbps internet
bandwith were provided for the students to do various activities. Also, around
the central library building, 2 (two) hotspots for free internet are already
available to help with students’ learning activities.
