Malang<\/strong> \u2013 Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) continues to strengthen its culture of innovation and research downstreaming through a Patent Draft Revision Workshop held on the 9th Floor of the Joint Lecture Building (GKB) A20, Wednesday (April 29, 2026). A total of 200 inventors from among lecturers, researchers, and the academic community participated in the event to sharpen their invention drafts to ensure strong legal protection and readiness to compete in the industrial world. <\/p>\n\n

This activity is a strategic step for UM in accelerating the birth of campus innovations that do not stop at research results alone, but are capable of developing into products with economic value and direct impact on society. Through intensive mentoring, inventors are encouraged to understand the importance of drafting precise patent descriptions and claims so that their inventions possess high competitiveness. <\/p>\n\n

The Director of Innovation at UM, Prof. Dr. Nandang Mufti, S.Si., M.T., emphasized that patents play a vital role in maintaining the sustainability of academic innovation. According to him, the protection of intellectual property rights is the primary foundation to ensure that research results are not easily claimed by other parties.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cA patent is a defensive fortress for our intellectual property. Securing intellectual property rights early on means safeguarding the integrity of innovation so it is not claimed by others and is ready to provide a real impact for the community,\u201d stated Prof. Nandang.<\/p>\n\n

The workshop, which took place from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, featured a senior practitioner in the field of Intellectual Property (IP), Ir. Dodong Sofyan Sachmid, M.M. In his presentation, he reviewed various common errors that often arise in drafting patents, ranging from weaknesses in descriptions to claims that do not strongly demonstrate the novelty of the invention. <\/p>\n\n

With an interactive style, Ir. Dodong explained that the quality of a patent draft is a determining factor in the success of an invention obtaining legal protection. He emphasized the importance of drafting claims that are detailed, measurable, and in accordance with national legality standards. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cA good patent draft must be able to demonstrate the novelty value of the invention clearly, in detail, and still fulfill the applicable legal aspects,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n

Beyond receiving material, participants also had the opportunity for direct consultation regarding technical obstacles they faced during the patent document preparation process. This assistance is considered essential as many inventors still experience difficulties in translating research results into legal documents that meet the standards of the Directorate General of Intellectual Property. <\/p>\n\n

The draft revision process was also overseen by the Head of the IPR and Industrial Cooperation Division of UM, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Alfian Mizar, M.P. He ensured that every inventor received relevant guidance so that the submitted inventions not only pass administrative requirements but also have a significant chance of being implemented in the industrial world.<\/p>\n\n

Through this activity, UM aims to improve the quality of the patents produced, rather than merely chasing the number of registrations. Strong document quality is believed to increase the opportunities for research downstreaming while opening up industrial collaborations in the future. <\/p>\n\n

The enthusiasm of the participants who stayed until the end of the event demonstrates the increasing awareness of the academic community regarding the importance of intellectual property protection. This condition also reflects the vibrant innovation within the UM environment, which continues to grow as part of the transformation into a research and technology-based university. <\/p>\n\n

The Patent Draft Revision Workshop is also in line with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals<\/em> (SDGs), particularly SDG 9 regarding Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure through the strengthening of research capacity and technological development. Furthermore, the collaboration between inventors, IP practitioners, and the UM IPR Division reflects the spirit of SDG 17 regarding Partnerships for the Goals. <\/p>\n\n

On the other hand, the birth of superior patents from the campus is expected to support SDG 8 regarding Decent Work and Economic Growth through the development of innovative products that can create new business opportunities and increase national industrial competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n
