History

Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) is a higher educational institution under the charge of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education. It is situated in Malang and Blitar of East Java province.

The university’s historical journey is as follows.

  1. Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru (PTPG) Malang, or Teacher Education College of Malang, was established on September 1, 1954 with the issuing of the Ministerial Decree Surat Putusan Menteri Pendidikan Pengadjaran dan Kebudajaan Republik Indonesia Nomor 33756/Kb, dated August 4, 1954. It was officially launched on October 18, 1954.
  2. On November 20, 1957, PTPG Malang transformed into Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan(FKIP, or the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education) of Universitas Airlangga Surabaja, with the issuing of the Ministerial Decree Surat Putusan Menteri Pendidikan Pengadjaran dan Kebudajaan Republik Indonesia Nomor 119533/S, dated November 20, 1957.
  3. On May 1, 1963, FKIP of Universitas Airlangga Surabaja grow to be Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (IKIP, or the Instutite of Teacher Teaching and Education) Malang with the issuing of the Ministerial Decree Keputusan Menteri Perguruan Tinggi dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Nomor 55 Tahun 1963, dated May 22, 1963; and
  4. Starting from August 4, 1999, the institution has been formally renamed into Universitas Negeri Malang with the Presidential Decree Keputusan Presiden Republik Indonesia Nomor 93 Tahun 1999, dated August 4, 1999.

The university’s milestone

1967: named the best English study program in Southeast Asia by The Ford Foundation

1967: named one of 10 (ten) leading higher education institutions in Indonesia

1998–2010: won the program of JICA DUE-Like TPSDP Semi-QUE I-MHERE INHERENT SP4 PHK A1 & A2 Partnership Grant and Equipment Grant for PGSD-A PHK-I, as well as PHK-TIK PHK DIA Bermutu

2008: Faculty of Sports Science was opened

2008: named one of government institutions operating the financial management of Public Service Agency (Badan Layanan Umum/BLU)

2009: Faculty of Social Science was opened
